Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish recently released her highly anticipated debut album, “WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” The album contains 14 tracks, one of them being an introduction to the album.
Eilish’s popularity grew over the past few years from hit singles such as “Bellyache” and “Copycat.” Eilish’s overwhelming popularity and musical ability are impressive due to the fact she is only 17 years old. Her musical style is a mix of indie, rock and electronic music, which also includes horror undertones. In a way, Eilish is her own genre of music.
After the introduction, the album starts off with the song “bad guy.” This song portrays Eilish as “the bad guy” by portraying her as tough but saying her lover may not be as tough as he says he is. “bad guy” also has a music video which is a mesh of mostly Eilish dancing. However, the speed of the videos and editing make it somewhat disturbing to watch because it portrays Eilish as insane.
I really enjoy her adding her own touch to the album. Such as in the song “my strange addiction” she adds dialogue from the television series “The Office” throughout the song. However, this song is very catchy, especially the chorus where Eilish sings “Bad, bad news / One of us is gonna lose / I’m the powder, you're the fuse / Just add some friction.”
Another musical touch Eilish added was in the song “xanny” where every other beat in the chorus uses heavy distorting bass. I think this has a good effect though because the songs about shrugging off drugs, and the bass kind of imitates the uncomfortableness of the drugs. Eilish sings the role model lyrics of “I'm in their second-hand smoke / Still just drinking canned Coke / I don't need a Xanny to feel better.”
In addition, the songs “you should see me in a crown,” “when the party's over” and “bury a friend” all came out prior to the album’s release. They all have music videos to which have all gained over 100 million views on Youtube and each have memorable qualities to them.
In the music video for “You should see me in a crown,” Eilish has real spiders crawling over her and in the middle of the song a tarantula crawls out of her mouth.
In “bury a friend,” the focus is on Eilish becoming a demon with equally terrifying lyrics, “For the debt I owe / Gotta sell my soul / 'Cause I can't say no, no, I can't say no / Then my limbs all froze and my eyes won't close.” In addition, the chorus to “Bury a friend,” Eilish repeats the line “I wanna end me” multiple times.
“when the party's over” is a slower pace song about distance in a relationship. In this video, Eilish cries black tears while singing “Quiet when I'm coming home / And I'm on my own / I could lie, say I like it like that / Like it like that.”
Another mentionable song on the album is “ilomilo” which Eilish says shares the name of a computer game she used to play. The concept of the game was for two creatures who start off far apart, float through antigravity to find each other again. Inspired by this game, Eilish shares on PopBuzz that, "So the whole idea of the game is just losing the person you love and then finding them again." This is essentially the meaning of the song as well.
One of my favorite songs on the album is “all the good girls go to hell” which has a catchy beat with rather creepy lyrics. Eilish starts the song by singing in a distorted voice “My Lucifer is lonely.” Eilish horror factor to the album really makes it unique.
I think this album is very well put together and very different from other artists. Overall, it is safe to say Eilish is the most talented 17-year-old I’ve seen and that she will only continue to rise in fame.
