TV

Are you tired of watching the same shows over and over again? Do you want something new and refreshing to enjoy while stuck in the house during quarantine? I have a list for you! Here are my top 5 binge-worthy TV shows on Netflix and Hulu.

5. “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness”, Netflix

This probably goes without saying, but this show has garnered so much attention this past week. The newest limited series from Netflix focused on Joe Exotic, aka the Tiger King, and his wildlife park. There is an insane amount of plot twists and storylines in this series, that even attempting to cover them all would be doing the show a disservice. If you’re into murder mysteries, crime dramas or just looking for something to keep your attention for a while, “Tiger King” is the show for you. I feel obliged to warn, though, that if you are in any way an animal rights activist or vegan for the sake of animal rights, you may find parts of this docuseries disturbing.

4. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, Hulu

Comedies are always a good go-to during a boring time, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is one of the best on television right now. The show is still airing on NBC, but there are plenty of seasons and antics to catch up on through Hulu. Andy Samberg is the star of this cop comedy that has humor similar to shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation”. The cast of characters is diverse and each person at the precinct has a fun, unique personality. If you’re a fan of Samberg and/or workplace comedy at all, you will enjoy this one.

3. “Ozark”, Netflix

The third season of this crime drama dropped on Friday and I am already one episode away from finishing the season. If there was ever a show to describe as addicting, “Ozark” is it. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney star in this Netflix drama that is most accurately described as “Breaking Bad” on steroids. The show centers around a family moving from Chicago to Missouri and laundering money for a drug boss while running into many other problems along the way. There’s suspense, action, humor, romance, and drama. What more could you ask for?

2. John Mulaney’s Stand-Up Specials, Netflix

John Mulaney is my favorite comedian ever, and he has three hilarious specials on Netflix: “New in Town”, “The Comeback Kid” and “Kid Gorgeous.” Granted, they’ve all been available for a while so you may have already enjoyed them. However, if you haven’t, now is the time. If you have, why not enjoy them all over again? Mulaney covers a wide variety of topics and his humor is very sarcastic and relevant. My personal favorite is “Comeback Kid,” but any and all of these specials are sure to entertain for a few hours and open the door to a whole new type of funny for you.

1. “Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural”, Hulu

This show is a little bit of everything. It’s a ghost hunting show that originally started on Buzzfeed’s Youtube account and has since been moved to Hulu and Prime Video platforms as well. The two hosts, Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej, have opposing views on whether or not ghosts exist. Yet, they both go on these adventures to allegedly haunted places together. The contrast between the two makes for some good humor and an entertaining watch. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you’re sure to enjoy the banter between Bergara and Madej along with the stories behind the creepy locations they visit.

The views expressed are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of The Torch.
