On Aug. 10, President José Padilla announced Valparaiso University’s (VU) new nickname: Beacons. An email sent to the campus community provided a link to a video in which students and staff stated the title’s meaning to them, also unveiling a lighthouse as Valpo’s corresponding logo.

The nickname “Beacons” was noted for its direct connection with VU’s motto, “In Luce Tua Videmus Lucem,” or “In Thy Light We See Light.” In addition, Padilla stated historical ties, including the namesakes for the Beacon Hall and the University’s yearbook, The Beacon

“Beacons is a nickname that honors our past, present, and future,” Padilla wrote.

Padilla noted the campus community’s role in choosing the Beacon nickname, including by providing suggestions, participating in focus groups and voting in surveys.

Padilla affirmed VU’s commitment to the nickname and its adherence to University values, writing, “We Are Beacons. May your light continue to shine.”
