On Aug. 16, Student Life sent an email to the Valparaiso University community detailing the updated COVID-19 guidelines for the beginning of the fall semester. As 90% of faculty, staff and students have been vaccinated, Student Life stated that VU’s operations will be entirely in-person for the fall.
Following CDC guidelines, all of the VU community will be required to wear face coverings inside all campus buildings from Aug. 17 to Sept. 6. Wearing face masks in large outdoor gatherings is also encouraged. After Sept. 6, a decision will be made on making face coverings optional for those who are fully vaccinated.
Individuals who are unvaccinated, due to an approved exemption or who are midway through the vaccination process, will be required to wear face masks at all University functions until further notice.
Residential Life is reserving quarantine and isolation space for on-campus students. Students living off-campus will be required to develop their own plan in case they are required to stay in isolation. Vaccinated students who have been exposed to COVID-19 will not be able to attend class unless wearing a face covering until they have been cleared by the Student Health Center. Unvaccinated students will be placed into quarantine housing or off-campus isolation, depending on if they live on or off-campus. Quarantines will last for 10 to 14 days, or until released by the Student Health Center. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated students will need to receive a COVID-19 test from the Student Health Center 3-5 days after direct exposure.
Other than face coverings being required until Sept. 6, all VU events and activities will continue without group size limitations. There will be no restrictions for vaccinated students, and unvaccinated students will be able to participate if wearing masks.
