In an email to the campus community, Student Life shared an update from the Mascot Recommendation Committee on June 10. The email provided a link to a Google Form, sharing updated information and requesting the feedback of the university’s affiliates.

Through Focus Group responses, the Mascot Committee determined that the mascot should contain some theme of light in reference to the university’s motto, “In luce tua videmus lucem or in Thy light we see light.” Another promoted theme was the inclusion of Indiana and the region’s natural draws.

The mascot is intended as an additional, less strict form of Valpo branding and other symbols associated with the brand will still be used.

The survey, which addresses staff, faculty, alumni and students, asks for rankings of several mascot options on different measures. The eight presented selections are the Valpo Storm, Beacons, Gold, Sparks, Lightning, Tempest, Dunehawks and Lightning Hawks. Survey questions include scoring each mascot on how representative they are of Valpo as well as their marketability and appeal.

The Google Form will close on June 15 at 5 p.m. and the final mascot decision is expected in the near future.

This is a developing story. The Torch will update this story as more information becomes available.
