Belmont University is set to join the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) starting July 1, 2023. This news was announced on Sept. 28, 2021.
Belmont joins as the 11th team of the MVC. Belmont’s team, the Bruins, will compete as part of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) for the final time this year. They have been a part of the OVC since 2012.
I will not lie, Belmont is one of those mid-major schools that tend to be really good, but is often overshadowed. The Bruins have seen recent success in their athletic programs.
If we take a look at their men’s basketball program, the Bruins had a 26-4 record last season. The team was able to make their way to the OVC Championship, but lost to Morehead State 86-71.
As for their women’s basketball team, the squad was able to get a bid into the NCAA tournament and make it as far as the second round.
The men’s cross country team scored high in the OVC championship, ending in 3rd place out of 11.
Belmont’s men’s tennis team won in the OVC tournament, but lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. While Belmont’s women’s soccer team ended last season with a 5-4-1 record.
From the examples listed, we see that Belmont was successful during the last school year or the spring season.
Over the years, Belmont has had history with Valparaiso University throughout different sports.
In most recent years, Belmont softball has faced off against teams in the Valley during their non-conference schedule last season.
Belmont was able to beat Loyola Chicago twice 2-1, 7-6. Valpo dropped one game 2-1, but bounced back 9-1 in the next game.
Valpo softball is currently 2-4 against Belmont in their program history.
As for Valpo’s men’s basketball program, the Beacons are 9-2 against Belmont. Their last meeting was during the 2015-2016 season when Valpo was part of the Horizon League.
Valpo’s women’s basketball team has never played Belmont before. Valpo Baseball is 0-4 against the Bruins, their last meeting happening during the 2013 season.
Valpo women’s soccer is 4-2 against the Bruins. The last meeting was not in Valpo’s favor, dropping a 1-0 match back on Sept. 9, 2018.
For the women’s volleyball program, the team has played Belmont only once. Valpo won back in 2005 against the Bruins.
